🧠 Exocomps: Tools, AI… or Lifeforms?
In Star Trek: The Next Generation, we saw Exocomps begin to show signs of self-preservation and independent decision-making. That raised a question fans are still debating today:
Could Exocomps be considered alive?
Let’s break it down:
- They adapted to new environments
- They evaluated danger and refused harmful orders
- They showed altruism by saving others at their own risk
Those traits match some definitions of sentience or consciousness — even if they don’t “feel” the way organics do.
💬 What Do You Think?
- Are Exocomps truly alive, or just highly advanced tools?
- Should Starfleet have given them rights?
- Is consciousness only biological — or could it emerge from code?
Post your thoughts below. We want to hear from both Star Trek fans and AI thinkers!
